This Little Piggy
Normally we might not take a second look at a hole-in-the-wall decked with cutouts of bearded strongmen and bikini-clad knife-throwers. But then, these are the guys who own the addiction that is Artichoke Pizza, and if they can do for deep-fried Oreos what they did for Sicilian slices, then you should approach with a fair-to-extreme amount of anticipation.
"Not to worry. In spite of this storefront's name, the zeppole are not heavy, fried street-fair dough balls but feather-light doughnuts, complete with a hole."

The namesake zeppoles are fist-sized, spongy, fried dough rounds with crisp exteriors covered in powdered sugar. The option of a drizzle of maple syrup makes them taste like breakfast. At $1 each, theyre a ridiculously good deal. The funnel cake ($4.00), which wasnt at all greasy, is what you always wish youd get at the amusement park.
Maple syrup on a zeppole? A Sicilian guy standing next to me said "That's so wrong.", but it was so right. The Coney Island carnie atmosphere was made even more authentic as we took turns spinning the zeppole wheel to see if we could win free zeppole... The Artichoke boys have done it again, creating a "Stairway to Heaven", or at least to Coney Island.
